Eigg Win Green Energy Award
Best Community Initiative goes to the Isle of Eigg Electricity Project
Winners of the seventh annual awards, sponsored by npower renewables, were announced at a gala ceremony on Thursday, December 4, at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh. The event saw over 700 individuals from communities, the European renewables industry and from the world of politics and the media attend the awards. Leader of the Labour Party in the Scottish Parliament Iain Gray MSP delivered the keynote speech at the event.
Ian MacGillivray of Synergie Scotland, Project Managers for Eigg Electric said ” The community of Eigg really deserves this award. The trustees embarked on the project with clear community objectives in terms of 24/7 power, with ambitious sustainability objectives and with the energy and drive to actually get things done. The integration of the various technologies in a small self-contained system was a serious technical challenge. The budget also presented its own problems but the electrification is now up and running successfully. Eigg shows what can be done when communities, designers, engineers, project managers and contractors work collaboratively. We would acknowledge the particular contributions of John Booth and Maggie Fyfe to Eigg Electric’s success and encourage people who haven’t been to Eigg to go, visit and see the difference the project has made. In Synergie we say that we bring “ an intelligent approach to the built environment” and this project is one that we are very proud to be associated with.”
